History of The Montgomery Zoo
The Montgomery Zoo was first conceptualized at Oak Park as 41 acres was set aside at Oak Park for a zoo. The first animals did not arrive at the zoo until 1935. The park was open in there until 1960 when the zoo was forced to shut down due to the racial violence that was taking place in Montgomery.
In 1967 there was land set aside again for a new zoo. The new zoo opened in 1972 having just a few exhibits. In 1989 the zoo underwent a major expansion that took it to its current size and the zoo became its own department within the city.
The Montgomery Zoo has several animals in it that can only be seen in Zoos. There are well over 70 different species of animals at the zoo and it is broken up in to continents of habitat for the animals so that they are grouped with in the zoo as they would be in the wild. There are animals represented from almost every continent at the Montgomery Zoo.
The Montgomery Zoo has several other attractions other than the standard zoo with in it as well. There is a petting zoo, a park/playground, horseback rides, a sky lift, and even a train that runs through the entire zoo. While most of these things cost an additional fee from the general admission they do make the extra income needed to keep the zoo finically stable.
Over all the Montgomery Zoo is one of the best in the southeast and has revived several favorable reviews and even had 4.4 out of 5 on a google review by visitors who have rated it. The zoo is one of the best places around to educate children with the zoo and the Mann Wildlife Museum.
